Journeys

The world is our classroom.

A four year sequence of experiential Journeys explores issues of power, responsibility and identity at destinations such as Bryce Canyon National Park, New Orleans, and Israel. This unique program enhances education through real-world experience.

Each journey is designed not only to experience adventures and learning on the road, but also to return with fresh skills of inquiry, practical experience with diversity and building a pluralistic community, and tools to deepen self-discovery.

ANNOUNCING:  The 2011 Journeys

Senior Journey Toward Service
New Orleans
March 21-25, 2011
JCHS students will explore the unique cultural and environmental ecosystem of this special city and invest in community outreach. We will explore, work together, and challenge each other on issues of environment, race, class, and privilege, while reflecting on each of these issues as growing adults with expanding senses of personal values and global social justice.

Junior Journey Toward Connection and Peoplehood
Israel
March 13-27, 2011

JCHS will explore themes of Jewish peoplehood, our connection to the land of Israel, and the challenges of building a modern state and developing an energetic, expressive, and modern culture informed by ancient themes, contemporary Hebrew, and the rhythms of Jewish life. JCHS continues to be grateful to the Jim Joseph Foundation for its financial support in 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 for this journey and for enhanced curriculum planning that enables us to grow and refine this program.

Sophomore Journey Toward Nature and Spirit
Zion & Bryce National Parks and Las Vegas
March 21-25, 2011
JCHS students will travel to Las Vegas and to Zion and Bryce National Parks to explore the human connection to nature and land, and to reflect on the tensions between spirituality and civilization, service and excess.

Freshmen Journey Toward Community and Identity
Southern California
March 21- 25, 2011
JCHS students will travel to a retreat center outside of Los Angeles to explore their own grade identity, to foster bonds and grade morale, and to explore issues and tensions that are normal parts of building and sustaining communities.

"The Journeys are up close and personal. We had heard stories about the Hualapai people and culture in class before we left, and the pictures in our minds actually became real."  -Sophia Wilkof, Class of 2011
